Written by Concordia Publishing House | December 13, 2022

Celebrate the coming of the Magi and the Epiphany season by joining in fellowship through music. As you prepare for the season, consider adding these pieces to your repertoire for your Sunday services.

“A Carol for Epiphany” | SATB, Organ, Oboe, Finger Cymbals, Hand Drum

This unique carol, beginning with an introduction of organ, oboe, and finger cymbals, shows the Magi's journey to the manger. Composed by Carl Schalk, the carol includes oboe and hand drum to bring a fun listening experience to your congregation that differs from traditional hymns. Try something new in your worship experience with this carol for SATB choirs.

“Arise, Shine; for Your Light Has Come” | Two-Part Mixed, Organ

This easy composition by Mark Bender is perfect for Epiphany as your choir sings “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” This anthem’s text is from two of the Old Testament verses appointed for the Epiphany of our Lord and would accompany your liturgy beautifully as an offertory or closing hymn.

Partita on “Jesus Has Come” | Organ, optional Hand Drum

John Behnke has composed this imaginative organ partita based on Lutheran Service Book 533. The fun introductory rhythm will keep your congregants’ toes tapping along and faces smiling as the recognizable melody joins a few measures later. The arrangement is divided into multiple parts, and the first part would make a great hymn introduction if your service will include JESUS IST KOMMEN, GRUND EWIGER FREUDE.

“Arise and Shine in Splendor” | Organ

For organists looking for something engaging and lively, this piece is a great addition to your repertoire. The running eighth-note harmony is fun for both listener and player while accompanying the tune O WELT, ICH MUSS DICH LASSEN. Give this arrangement by Kevin Sadowski a try during your Epiphany services.

“As with Gladness Men of Old” | 2–3 Octave Handbells, Piano

Piano and handbells join together in this beautiful arrangement of LSB 397. Composed by Jeffrey Honoré, this flowing handbell piece uses various techniques that make it perfect for your handbell choir to study and learn together for worship. Try this setting during Epiphany this year!
