18 ה֥וֹי הַ‍מִּתְאַוִּ֖ים אֶת־י֣וֹם יְהוָ֑ה

לָ‍מָּה־זֶּ֥ה לָ‍כֶ֛ם י֥וֹם יְהוָ֖ה הוּא־חֹ֥שֶׁךְ וְ‍לֹא־אֽוֹר׃

19 כַּ‍אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָנ֥וּס אִישׁ֙ מִ‍פְּנֵ֣י הָ‍אֲרִ֔י וּ‍פְגָע֖‍וֹ הַ‍דֹּ֑ב

וּ‍בָ֣א הַ‍בַּ֔יִת וְ‍סָמַ֤ךְ יָד‍וֹ֙ עַל־הַ‍קִּ֔יר וּ‍נְשָׁכ֖‍וֹ הַ‍נָּחָֽשׁ׃

20 הֲ‍לֹא־חֹ֛שֶׁךְ י֥וֹם יְהוָ֖ה וְ‍לֹא־א֑וֹר וְ‍אָפֵ֖ל וְ‍לֹא־נֹ֥גַֽהּ לֽ‍וֹ׃

21 שָׂנֵ֥אתִי מָאַ֖סְתִּי חַגֵּי‍כֶ֑ם וְ‍לֹ֥א אָרִ֖יחַ בְּ‍עַצְּרֹֽתֵי‍כֶֽם׃

22 כִּ֣י אִם־תַּעֲלוּ־לִ֥‍י עֹל֛וֹת

וּ‍מִנְחֹתֵי‍כֶ֖ם לֹ֣א אֶרְצֶ֑ה וְ‍שֶׁ֥לֶם מְרִיאֵי‍כֶ֖ם לֹ֥א אַבִּֽיט׃

23 הָסֵ֥ר מֵ‍עָלַ֖‍י הֲמ֣וֹן שִׁרֶ֑י‍ךָ וְ‍זִמְרַ֥ת נְבָלֶ֖י‍ךָ לֹ֥א אֶשְׁמָֽע׃

24 וְ‍יִגַּ֥ל כַּ‍מַּ֖יִם מִשְׁפָּ֑ט וּ‍צְדָקָ֖ה כְּ‍נַ֥חַל אֵיתָֽן׃

Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you have the day of the Lord? It is darkness, and not light, as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall, and a serpent bit him. Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it? “I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them. Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

1 Thessalonians 4:13–18

4:13 Οὐ θέλομεν δὲ ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν, ἀδελφοί, περὶ τῶν κοιμωμένων, ἵνα μὴ λυπῆσθε καθὼς καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ οἱ μὴ ἔχοντες ἐλπίδα.  4:14 εἰ γὰρ πιστεύομεν ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἀπέθανεν καὶ ἀνέστη, οὕτως καὶ ὁ θεὸς τοὺς κοιμηθέντας διὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἄξει σὺν αὐτῷ.

4:15 Τοῦτο γὰρ ὑμῖν λέγομεν ἐν λόγῳ κυρίου, ὅτι ἡμεῖς οἱ ζῶντες οἱ περιλειπόμενοι εἰς τὴν παρουσίαν τοῦ κυρίου οὐ μὴ φθάσωμεν τοὺς κοιμηθέντας·  4:16 ὅτι αὐτὸς ὁ κύριος ἐν κελεύσματι, ἐν φωνῇ ἀρχαγγέλου καὶ ἐν σάλπιγγι θεοῦ, καταβήσεται ἀπ᾽ οὐρανοῦ καὶ οἱ νεκροὶ ἐν Χριστῷ ἀναστήσονται πρῶτον, 4:17 ἔπειτα ἡμεῖς οἱ ζῶντες οἱ περιλειπόμενοι ἅμα σὺν αὐτοῖς ἁρπαγησόμεθα ἐν νεφέλαις εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ κυρίου εἰς ἀέρα·  καὶ οὕτως πάντοτε σὺν κυρίῳ ἐσόμεθα.  4:18 Ὥστε παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους ἐν τοῖς λόγοις τούτοις.

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Matthew 25:1–13

25:1 Τότε ὁμοιωθήσεται ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν δέκα παρθένοις, αἵτινες λαβοῦσαι τὰς λαμπάδας ἑαυτῶν ἐξῆλθον εἰς ὑπάντησιν τοῦ νυμφίου.  25:2 πέντε δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἦσαν μωραὶ καὶ πέντε φρόνιμοι.  25:3 αἱ γὰρ μωραὶ λαβοῦσαι τὰς λαμπάδας αὐτῶν οὐκ ἔλαβον μεθ᾽ ἑαυτῶν ἔλαιον.  25:4 αἱ δὲ φρόνιμοι ἔλαβον ἔλαιον ἐν τοῖς ἀγγείοις μετὰ τῶν λαμπάδων ἑαυτῶν.  25:5 χρονίζοντος δὲ τοῦ νυμφίου ἐνύσταξαν πᾶσαι καὶ ἐκάθευδον.  25:6 μέσης δὲ νυκτὸς κραυγὴ γέγονεν, Ἰδοὺ ὁ νυμφίος, ἐξέρχεσθε εἰς ἀπάντησιν [αὐτοῦ].  25:7 τότε ἠγέρθησαν πᾶσαι αἱ παρθένοι ἐκεῖναι καὶ ἐκόσμησαν τὰς λαμπάδας ἑαυτῶν.  25:8 αἱ δὲ μωραὶ ταῖς φρονίμοις εἶπαν, Δότε ἡμῖν ἐκ τοῦ ἐλαίου ὑμῶν, ὅτι αἱ λαμπάδες ἡμῶν σβέννυνται.  25:9 ἀπεκρίθησαν δὲ αἱ φρόνιμοι λέγουσαι, Μήποτε οὐ μὴ ἀρκέσῃ ἡμῖν καὶ ὑμῖν·  πορεύεσθε μᾶλλον πρὸς τοὺς πωλοῦντας καὶ ἀγοράσατε ἑαυταῖς.  25:10 ἀπερχομένων δὲ αὐτῶν ἀγοράσαι ἦλθεν ὁ νυμφίος, καὶ αἱ ἕτοιμοι εἰσῆλθον μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ εἰς τοὺς γάμους καὶ ἐκλείσθη ἡ θύρα.  25:11 ὕστερον δὲ ἔρχονται καὶ αἱ λοιπαὶ παρθένοι λέγουσαι, Κύριε κύριε, ἄνοιξον ἡμῖν.  25:12 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν, Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, οὐκ οἶδα ὑμᾶς.  25:13 Γρηγορεῖτε οὖν, ὅτι οὐκ οἴδατε τὴν ἡμέραν οὐδὲ τὴν ὥραν.

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.


Commentary

Amos 5:18–24

The following is from Amos, Concordia Commentary series, by R. Reed Lessing.

“Amos is refuting a view widely held among the unfaithful Israelites that ‘the Day of Yahweh’ would usher in more of Yahweh’s blessings. His prophetic discourse, once again, takes a positive popular opinion and turns it upside down. Contrary to Israel’s deceptive theology of success and prosperity, Yahweh’s arrival will not be a day of national victory and celebration but a night of horrific disaster and defeat. Amos opposes ‘popular eschatology’ by presenting ‘Yahwistic eschatology, in which the divine demands count and the divine-human relationships are at the center, transforming and shaping all inter-human relationships.’ The eschatological ‘day’ will bring judgment upon all those who were abusing fellow members of God’s people (as detailed throughout Amos) and who were visiting syncretistic shrines in the vain hope of thereby securing God’s favor” (p. 354).
