Devotions for Pentecost

the lord will answerYesterday the Church celebrated Pentecost, the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday when the Holy Spirit was outpoured on the disciples and many people came to faith in Christ. Posted below are the devotions for the day of Pentecost and the day after Pentecost from The Lord Will Answer, a devotional book arranged by the seasons of the Christian calendar and Luther’s Small Catechism with Explanation.

The Day of Pentecost

Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the faith.

In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.

In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers.

On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ.

This is most certainly true.

What five points does this article discuss?

We believe: 1. The Holy Spirit, 2. The Church (the Communion of Saints), 3. The Forgiveness of Sins, 4. The Resurrection of the Body, and 5. The Life Everlasting.

Pray: May the very God of all things, who spoke by the Holy Spirit, through the prophets, and sent Him forth upon the apostles in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost, send Him forth now upon you also. May He guard us through the Spirit, imparting His bounty in common to all of us, so as to exhibit always the fruits of the Holy Spirit: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, chastity, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Through Christ, and with Him, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory to the Father, now and always and forever and ever. Amen. (Cyril of Jerusalem, c. 315–87)

Monday after Pentecost

Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed

I believe in the Holy Spirit.

What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel. (p. 15)

Who is the Holy Spirit? How do you know that the Holy Spirit is God?  How is the Holy Spirit different from other spirits? Jesus taught:

Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19

Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit? . . . You have not lied to men but to God.” Acts 5:3–4

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16

We believe: The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Holy Trinity—true God with the Father and the Son—therefore, not merely the power or energy of God. The Scriptures clearly call Him God, teaching that the Holy Spirit has divine names.

Pray: O Holy Spirit of God, very God, who descended upon Christ at the River Jordan, and upon the apostles in the upper chamber, we have sinned against heaven and before You; purify us again, we beg You, with Your divine fire, and have mercy upon us; for Christ’s sake. Amen. (Nerses of Clajensis, Armenia, 1102–1173)
