Every summer, Concordia Publishing House selects qualified LCMS students for our summer internship program. This year, we have eleven students who are gaining experience in various aspects of publishing, business, and leadership. Learn about them below!

    Name: Allie Back

    How did you hear about the internship program, and what made you apply?

    I heard about the internship through a professor at school. I had previously wanted to apply but I was too young, so I was very excited to finally be able to send in an application! I strive to intern and work at companies that are ethically and morally sound; CPH was the perfect fit for my requirements and based on the position description I felt I would learn a lot through this program.

    What’s your favorite thing about CPH?

    Only 2 weeks in and I can already see how the environment is full of positivity and support. I admire the team’s excitement and willingness to involve the interns on projects. CPH truly wants the interns to have an experience that will enhance their knowledge of the department in which they are interning and also create lasting relationships.

    Favorite Bible verse?

    “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” Romans 8:18

    One fun fact about you:

    I have an obsession with hot dogs, probably because I am from Chicago, and go out of my way to find the BEST hot dog places around!

    How did you hear about the internship program, and what made you apply?

    I heard about the program through a former intern, and through one of my English professors at CUNE (shoutout to Dr. Haley!). I applied because the former intern was so intent on how awesome the internship was. She gave such an encouraging account of her experience here that I wanted to be a part of it!

    What’s your favorite thing about CPH?

    Definitely the people—everyone’s so encouraging and friendly.

    Name: Rachel Gonzalez

    School: Concordia University Ann Arbor

    Year in School: Graduated in May of 2017

    Major: English

    Hometown: Fredericksburg, Iowa

    How did you hear about the internship program, and what made you apply?

    A few of my professors at CUAA encouraged me to apply. I needed some experience after graduation and wanted to get a foot in the door of publishing, so I applied for this program.

    What’s your favorite thing about CPH?

    My favorite part of CPH is the environment created by the employees. It’s great to work in a place where people love what they’re doing, and even on the hard and busy days, they are still happy to be here.

    Favorite Bible verse?

    “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'” Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

    One fun fact about you:

    One time, my mom grounded me from reading Harry Potter for a whole month because I was quoting it to her too much, and she got annoyed.

    How did you hear about the internship program, and what made you apply?

    I heard about it from a family friend, who is also a deaconess. She emailed me and told me that she thought this would be a great fit for me, and I’m so glad she did! Thanks, Tonya.

    What’s your favorite thing about CPH?

    Everyone here is welcoming and supportive; I love the positive environment. CPH is interested in what I want to do and learn as an intern, and is willing to let me work on projects that will further my experience. I feel very blessed to be a part of this internship program.

    “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'” John 14:6

    Name: Grace Seying

    How did you hear about the internship program, and what made you apply?

    I heard about this internship program from my school’s career services.  They posted the positions on their website, and that’s where I found this internship program.  I applied for this internship because I wanted to work in an environment that supports church organizations.

    What’s your favorite thing about CPH?

    The environment is very friendly; everyone is nice to you, and always says hi when walking by.

    “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”  Romans 8:28

    I have done three cross-country road trips.

    How did you hear about the internship program, and what made you apply?

    The university pastor at Concordia University Chicago recommended that I apply for the program in order to see another piece of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. I ultimately applied because the work that I would be doing was similar to the work I had enjoyed doing in the Chapel of Our Lord at Concordia.

    What’s your favorite thing about CPH?

    My favorite thing about CPH, specifically about the internship program, is that the company makes an effort to take into account what the intern is interested in doing and what he or she wants to learn across the span of our nine weeks here.

    Favorite Bible verse?

    Luke 2:29-32. I’m drawn to the fact that the pinnacle of Simeon’s life was seeing the Christ Child. It is such a raw, yet tender moment within the story of Christ’s early life.

    One fun fact about you:

    I studied at Westfield House, the theological house of study for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England, in Cambridge, England, for a semester abroad while a student at Concordia University Chicago.

     

    Name: Peter Deberny

    School: Concordia University, Nebraska

    Year in School: Senior

    Major: Computer Science/Pre-Seminary

    Hometown: Buffalo, NY (Niagara Falls)

    How did you hear about the internship program, and what made you apply?

    I heard about the internship program from my computer science professor, Dr. Einspahr. He suggested that I try to apply for the job and sure enough, I got it. Another one of the big reasons I applied for the IT internship at CPH was because it was so close to the Seminary located in St. Louis. I plan to enter the Seminary as soon as I finish up my senior year, so this internship allows me to get to know the area as well as numerous people I will be coming across in the future.

    What’s your favorite thing about CPH?

    It’s definitely got to go to the fact that everyone is so open and friendly. People want to get to know you, even across departments.

    Favorite Bible Verse?

    I have quite a few favorites (after all, the Bible’s a big book), but I’ll pick John 8:58, where Jesus proclaims His Godhood.

    One fun fact about you:

    Both my parents desired became doctors, so you would think that I would want to go the same route. Nope, I have desired to become a pastor since I was 7 and I have never diverted from that path.

    How did you hear about the internship program, and what made you apply?

    I had researched the internship program before I was even in college! I also knew two students from my school who had been interns in the past and really loved their experiences.

    What’s your favorite thing about CPH?

     I don’t know if I can pick just one thing, but it would probably be the environment. I love that the people I work with are so kind and friendly, and I love that everything we do is centered in Christ! Starting off the day with a team devotion and getting to work with real adult churchworkers on children’s sermons, devotions, etc. is so awesome!

    Favorite Bible verse?

    That really depends on the day… right now I would say 1 John 4: 9–12

    One fun fact about you:

    I live on a farm! I have sheep and cattle (although I like the sheep a lot better than the cattle).

     

    Name: Marie Landskroener

    How did you hear about the internship program, and what made you apply?

    I was looking for jobs on the LCMS website when I ran across the internship. I want to work in church music someday, so I thought this internship seemed like my cup of tea.

    What’s your favorite thing about CPH?

     Thus far, it’s the kindness everyone has shown me. And I love being able to work closely with sacred music every day.

    Favorite Bible verse?

    Oh man, it depends on the situation. So many good ones!! But one that comes to mind is “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.” Proverbs 31:25

    One fun fact about you:

    I am obsessed (yes, obsessed) with Harry Potter. Don’t ever dis that series in front of me . . .

    How did you hear about the internship program, and what made you apply?

    I heard about this internship from my school announcement and I found out on my school website as well. I applied for this internship in order to have a good experience and learn new things every day. Building a network and making new friends is also another reason which made me to apply for this internship.

    What is your favorite thing about CPH?

    My favorite thing about CPH is being in a Christian work environment. And also, all the people I meet and work with every day are very friendly and awesome people.

    Favorite Bible verse?

    My favorite Bible verse is Romans 5:1-5.

    One fun fact about you: For me every day is an awesome day in Christ: Philippians 4:4; I am a twin!

    How did you hear about the internship program, and what made you apply?

    I just stumbled upon the internship on CPH’s website one day as a freshman in college and looked forward to applying. I wanted to apply because I love the Christ-centered focus of their mission in the everyday work. I am also very passionate about VBS and wanted to be a part of the larger production.

    What’s your favorite thing about CPH?

    My favorite thing about CPH (so far) is the Christ-centered focus and the family of CPH employees.

    Favorite Bible verse?

    My favorite Bible verse is “But God showed His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” Romans 5:8. Beautiful law and gospel!

    One fun fact about you:

    Fun fact—I am a huge coffee fanatic!  I like all kinds of coffee at any time of the day.
